Things I thought of in the shower

Hurriedly scribbled (sort of) notes, jotted down (kind of) while I dry off.

Patrick Swayze featuring Wendy Frazer, “She’s Like The Wind” (Dirty Dancing OST, 1987)

“Five pre-Beatle classics plus six postmodern horrors equals the soundtrack to the world’s longest rock video, a brutally depressing top-forty apotheosis. The comparisons are torture—revolting as the contempo material is, it sounds even worse in among the Five Satins and Mickey & Sylvia, who are in turn rendered unlistenable by the commercial manipulations that bring them back to commercial life.” Robert Christgau, Christgau’s Record Guide: The ’80s (1990)

I am particularly amused by this turning up in my feed tonight, as in the pub there was a certain level of discussion of 80s films for girls (prompted by the song from Flashdance which I assume is called What A Feeling - you know, the one in the adverts where someone takes a remedy for their stomach ailment and suddenly are able to direct traffic while doing a funny little dance at the same time - in which Dirty Dancing came up. And I know the Dirty Dancing soundtrack album well, painfully well, with its mix of songs you never want to hear ever (of which the above is a prime example) with songs that you would have liked to have heard in a different context and which would probably be played in indie discos to this day if they’d turned up on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack instead.

This is definitely easier than writing about a night out with workmates in which you may have totally ballsed up what should have been a perfect ending. Yes. Thanks, onestarmusic.
